From August 1961 till July 1962, I visited Annapolis, Maryland as an exchange student in the American Field Service program. This site is a tribute to my friends in Annapolis then, who have made my stay an unforgettable one.
As a teenager I once received a present from a friend of my parents. It was a delicate handkerchief with the map of American state printed on it. It lies here before me. It was the state of . . . . . . . Maryland.
Then years later, after I applied for the AFS scholarship, I received a letter from Mr. Stephen Galatti, Director General of the American Field Service dated July 17, 1961:
"I am so glad to be able to let ou know now just where you will be going in the United States. You will be living with:
Col & Mrs. Thomas M. Love
Wild Rose Shores
Annapolis, Maryland".
Then to think that my sugar-uncle could have given me a handkerchief with the map of one of the other 47 American states on it . . . . . . . ..
